The rescheduling of the Qatar tournament to the last two months of the year is set to be agreed at a Fifa task force meeting
Plans to hold Qatar's World Cup in November and December of 2022 are set to be finalised at a Fifa Task Force meeting on Tuesday.
Executives from around the football world have begun arriving in Qatar ahead of the summit, at which Fifa will finalise plans to alter the calendars of multiple seasons in order to move the World Cup away from the Arab nation’s blistering summer.
Interested parties from the globe’s leading domestic competitions are due to be involved in the talks, which will lead to seasons played across the 2022 and 2023 calendar years altered to accommodate the dramatic schedule change.
Fifa had previously confirmed that it was looking at the possibility of a January-February 2022 date as well as November-December, but AFC president Shaikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al-Khalifa recently claimed that the decision had “been resolved” in favour of the latter option.
If an agreement is reached as planned at the task force meeting, the dates will then be ratified in March, as recently confirmed by Fifa general secretary Jerome Valcke.
“We are working towards a final decision by the Fifa executive committee in March after a final meeting with the final stakeholders of the football community,” said the Frenchman.
Discontent remains over the staging of the World Cup in Qatar due to Fifa’s initial insistence during the bidding process that the tournament must be played across June and July.
