World Cup stadium accident leaves worker in intensive care

The latest incident at Arena Amazonia has left a 55-year-old in intensive care after a piece of the ground fell from a crane

World Cup 2014 stadium safety has taken a blow as another worker has been hospitalised by injuries related to the building of Arena Amazonia.

A 55-year-old, named in media reports as Antonio Jose Pita Martins, was photographed being rushed in hospital on Friday.

The press office for the project management of the stadium in Manaus, UGP Copa, confirmed the outsourced worker is alive, sedated and set to go into the local hospital's Intensive Care Unit.

The state's health secretary, Wilson Alecrim, revealed that Mr Martins has bruised his right shoulder, is suffering respiration issues and has severe head trauma.

Friday's accident is the latest in a number of incidents at stadiums being built for the World Cup.

Most notably, two people died when a crane collapsed in Sao Paulo, destroying a section of the recently built stadium.

Arena Amazonia has already claimed two workers' lives in 2013, while Brasilia is the other site to have suffered a fatality in the build up to this summer's tournament.
