Schalke can only applaud Dortmund, says Heldt

Schalke can only applaud Dortmund, says Heldt
The Schalke director has acknowledged that BVB are slightly ahead of his side in a number of areas, while stressing they have had their fair share of success as well

Horst Heldt respects Borussia Dortmund for what they have achieved in the past few seasons, but insists that Schalke have done pretty well themselves.

Dortmund have developed into one of Bayern Munich's biggest rivals both domestically and in Europe in recent years under coach Jurgen Klopp.

Schalke's CEO has acknowledged that Klopp's men are still ahead of his club in a number of areas after stating earlier this season that there was not much separating the two regional rivals.

"A lot has been said about my comment that Schalke could soon be on the same level as Dortmund again. We are on par with Dortmund in certain areas, but not everywhere."

"But I'm a Schalke director and I cannot go on and praise other clubs, while talking about Schalke as if we're a small club.

"However, I have always said that the Schalke directors doff their hat to Dortmund for what they have achieved. One can only have respect for what they have done in the past few years.

"They won two Bundesliga titles, a DFB Pokal and made it to the Champions League final for a good reason.

"That's not to say that we have done badly in the past few years, though. We won the DFB Pokal in 2011 and also made it to the semi-finals of the Champions League."

Dortmund currently sit third in the Bundesliga table with 36 points from 19 games, while Schalke sit fourth with 34 points.
