Nasri: Ribery will win 2014 Ballon d’Or if France win World Cup
The Man City midfielder says his Bleus team-mate - whom he thinks was the rightful victor - knew he had failed to win the award before the award ceremony

Manchester City attacker Samir Nasri thinks that Franck Ribery will be a nailed-on 2014 Ballon d’Or winner if France lift the World Cup this summer.

The Bayern Munich attacker finished a close third in the voting for January's award behind second-placed Barcelona star Lionel Messi and victor Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ribery's Bleus team-mate Nasri thinks that helping the Bavarians take home five trophies in 2013 should have been enough for the winger to win, whom he claims knew he was not going to take the individual accolade before it was announced.

Speaking to RMC Sport, Nasri said: "I talked with Franck Ribery the evening of the ceremony of the Ballon d'Or. He told me just before he knew he would not have it.

"Obviously, he was a little disappointed because he deserved it given his season. I told him he still had a great year, and if we win the World Cup then there will be no debate next season.

"Franck is a leader and he must be an example for a lot of players. Playing at this level and to be able to compete with Messi and Ronaldo - who are like aliens - it must be an example for all young people who make mistakes from time to time."

France have been drawn alongside Switzerland, Ecuador and Honduras in the World Cup.
