Lucky losers: Benitez believes score flattered Milan

Lucky losers: Benitez believes score flattered Milan
The Spaniard was impressed by how Napoli dismantled their opponents at the weekend, praising Gonzalo Higuain as well as January arrival Jorginho

Rafael Benitez claims AC Milan were lucky to leave Napoli with only a 3-1 scoreline on Saturday.

Adel Taarabt had opened the scoring for the visitors, but Gokhan Inler and a double from Gonzalo Higuain settled affairs, with the Argentine the recipient of multiple chances to extend the Paretenopei's lead.

"Clearly Gonzalo can make the difference, but his team-mates helped him a great deal and we created so many chances tonight," Benitez told reporters. "We could’ve scored a lot more.

"I have to compliment my players, as they played with intensity, pace and quality against Roma [in the Coppa Italia] and now Milan."

Napoli beat fierce competition to acquire starlet Jorginho from Hellas Verona in January, and Benitez was impressed with the impact he made.

"Jorginho works well and is still young. He has quality and the mental speed to think of the right pass," the trainer continued. "I am convinced with time to work pre-season he’ll be much better next year.

"I think we proved over the years that we want to win every game. It is a pity if we drop points on a few occasions, but we have a new squad and can improve with time.

"I spoke to the president [Aurelio De Laurentiis] and we are all happy with the performance, which was of a very high level."

The win has lifted the San Paolo outfit to within 12 points of Italian champions Juventus at the top of Serie A.
