The Nerazzurri have eight players whose contracts expire at the end of the season and a number of the club’s 2010 Champions League winners will not be offered new deals

Diego Milito, Walter Samuel and Cristian Chivu will all leave Inter when their contracts expire at the end of the season, and they could be joined by club captain Javier Zanetti and Esteban Cambiasso.

The Nerazzurri have eight members of their first team squad whose deals terminate in June and the club’s new owner Erick Thohir has already decided to release six of these players.

Milito - the hero of Inter’s 2010 treble success after scoring both goals in the Champions League final victory over Bayern Munich - has already begun to look for a new team, as has his countryman Samuel.

Romanian defender Chivu, who has been plagued by injuries over the past few years, will also not be offered a new contract. Third choice goalkeeper Luca Castellazzi turns 39 in the summer and will make way for younger blood. Midfielders Macdonald Mariga and Gaby Mudingayi are surplus to requirements.

In total, Inter will save more than €20 million a season in wages through these departures. Thohir has already stressed the need to cut running costs in line with FFP before he can attempt to rebuild a club that finished ninth last season and continues to struggle this term.

The future of two of Inter’s all-time icons - club captain Zanetti, 40, and 33-year-old defensive midfielder Cambiasso – also hangs in the balance. The Argentines will meet Thohir face to face to discuss their situations and it is possible they could be offered non-playing positions within the club.

The opinions of the pair – who are only willing to remain if they are integral members of the project - coach Walter Mazzarri and Thohir himself will all be considered before a final decision is made.

Zanetti joined Inter from Banfield in 1995 and has since established himself as one of the greatest players in the club’s history. Cambiasso moved to San Siro on a free transfer from Real Madrid in 2004 and, along with Zanetti, has won a host of honours during his time in Italy.
