Morata reveals Mourinho debt


The youngster says his former coach left a lasting mark on him during his time in charge after putting in a fine performance on Saturday

Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata has thanked Jose Mourinho for instilling a new-found work ethic into his game.

The Chelsea boss left the Santiago Bernabeu at the end of the season but only after leaving his mark on the Spain Under-21 star, who excelled in los Blancos' 2-0 win over Malaga on Saturday.

Speaking to Marca, Morata said: “I want to thank Jose Mourinho, who drilled it into my head that if you don’t work and toil, you’re less likely to play.”

Morata who was handed his first team debut by Mourinho back in 2011 and was afforded a rare start against Malaga having impressed as a substitute in his side' opening league fixtures this season.

The striker did not disappoint playing a key role in Madrid’s 2-0 victory, which earned him a rousing reception from the Madrid fans as he was substituted.

Morata thanked the fans by saying: "The appreciation I get from the people at the club and the fans is incredible. I am truly grateful. I am trying to pay them back with hard work and goals. The work is done and goals will come."

Morata will look to build upon his impressive form as Real Madrid host Juventus in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
