The 30-year-old has had an exceptional year and is the current favourite to win the prestigious award

Franck Ribery should win the 2013 Ballon d'Or, according to Germany legend Lothar Matthaus.

The Bayern Munich winger has had a terrific year, winning the treble with die Roten under Jupp Heynckes and carrying on his superb form under new boss Pep Guardiola.

The France international is now the bookies favourite the win the presigious award, and Matthaus believes the 30-year-old would be a more than worthy winner.

"Franck has already won Uefa's Best Player in Europe award, and that means he has a great chance of winning the Ballon d'Or," Matthaus told AZ.

"He certainly deserves it. He has thrilled us all with his outstanding displays at Bayern, not only with his dribbling but also with his work rate for good of the team.

"In 1990 I had the chance to work for two of the best sides in the world: Inter Milan and the German national team. Team work was the key in both of those sides, and Franck has learned that recently.

"My top three for the award would be Ribery, [Philipp] Lahm and [Robert] Lewandowski, although I fear [Lionel] Messi may win a fifth in a row."

Matthaus is the only German player to have ever won the prize, having lifted the award back in 1990 after captaining West Germany to victory at the 1990 World Cup.
