Kahn: Weidenfeller deserves Germany cap

Kahn: Weidenfeller deserves Germany cap

The former Bayern Munich shot-stopper believes that more Borussia Dortmund players should be called up to the national team ahead of the World Cup in Brazil next year

Former Germany No.1 Oliver Kahn says Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller should be part of Joachim Low’s World Cup squad for next year.

Germany coach Low, who signed an extension to his contract, had hinted recently that the BVB shot-stopper, now 33, could be in line for a call-up when the Mannschaft take on Italy and England in friendlies next month.

And Kahn believes a first cap is not before time.

“He could have had more caps than he has earned,” he told Bild.

"He’s a great guy with a great attitude.”

Dortmund have a number of homegrown players, such as Kevin Grosskreutz, who have not featured that heavily for Low’s side, but Kahn insists that these players must be given a chance on the international stage.

“It is often underestimated how much confidence emanates from winning a title," Kahn continued. "The Dortmund players are ready for the really big challenges.”

However, while the 44-year-old would be pleased to see Weidenfeller introduced to the national set-up, there is only one goalkeeper in his eyes that should be starting for Germany.

He added: “Neuer is the No.1. He has mastered all facets of modern goalkeeping, is at the cutting edge of technique and is a footballing keeper.”
