Villa, Afellay & the players who have no future at Barcelona

Villa, Afellay & the players who have no future at Barcelona
The Liga champions already shipped out Bojan Krkic on loan to Ajax last week and there are a few more players who could be on their way out

Barcelona secured the services of Neymar earlier this summer after chasing the Brazil international for a number of years.

However, with new players incoming, others will have to make way ahead of the 2013-14 campaign. The team will be re-evaluated shortly and up to 12 squad players could be on the move.

It is not too complicated to figure out who could be plying their trade away from Camp Nou in the coming 12 months, but there are a number of players who will almost certainly not be part of Tito Vilanova's plans for various reasons. DAILYSPOTSNEWS lines up four of the players who are up for the axe this summer.

DAVID VILLA
STATS 2012-13
League appearances 28
Goals 10
PROFILE
Value €12m
Age 31
Strengths Finishing, movement
Contract  2014

Ever since a serious injury in December 2011, David Villa has struggled to return to his best form at Barcelona. One of Spain's most beloved players spent much longer on the sidelines than initially expected and, even after his comeback, he was still plagued by physical problems which hindered his performances.

He enjoyed his finest moments in the closing weeks of the 2012-13 campaign when the Barca faithful called for Villa to make the starting XI again. In some games last season he performed admirably, but his performances were not up to scratch at times too. The Barca fans are slowly starting to realise that Villa is no longer a key member of their team and the arrival of Neymar only further complicates first-team matters for the forward.

JONATHAN DOS SANTOS
STATS 2012-13
League appearances 3
Goals 0
PROFILE
Value €2.5m
Age 23
Strengths Creativity, accuracy
Contract 2015

Jonathan dos Santos is an example of a Barca youth academy starlet who has been unable to live up to the high expectations. The midfield is a tough area to secure first-team football at Barcelona due to the stiff competition for places. Even though there's no doubting the Mexico international's quality, his lack of first-team action has hindered his progress.

Tito Vilanova was ready to sell him last year, but the midfielder eventually opted to stay put and fight for his chance. Nevertheless, he was unable to convince the coach and mainly warmed the bench if he made the matchday squad at all. If there's one youth product who could break into the Barca midfield, it's Thiago, not Jonathan. Barca are again happy to cash in on the Mexican this summer and the player himself seems ready to move on, too. Anderlecht are reportedly keen to lure him to Belgium and a move could be on the cards.

IBRAHIM AFELLAY
STATS 2012-13 (SCHALKE)
League appearances 10
Goals 2
PROFILE
Value €8m
Age 27
Strengths Passing, dribbling
Contract 2015

Ibrahim Afellay has plenty of quality, but the Dutchman has failed to really deliver since his move to Barca. A serious knee injury kept him out for nearly a full season and he was then farmed out on loan to Schalke after his comeback. However, his temporary transfer to the Bundesliga was by no means a success and he returned to Barca this summer.

His agent Rob Jansen has made it clear that Afellay still wants to succeed at the Catalans, but also admitted that the Premier League could be an interesting destination. However, there are no concrete offers for the Netherlands international as of yet.

ISAAC CUENCA
STATS 2012-13  (AJAX)
League appearances 3
Goals 0
PROFILE
Value €4m
Age 22
Strengths Control, passing
Contract  2015

Isaac Cuenca has superb tactical awareness and quickly became a noticeable part of Barca's first team after making the step up to the senior team. There's no questioning his ability, but his ongoing fitness problems are a serious worry. He went under the knife in 2012 and then spent eight months on the sidelines before making a loan move to Ajax in January. He made only three league appearances for the Dutch champions due to injury, though, and again underwent surgery this summer. The versatile attacker will be out of action until late September and his long-term future at the club is in serious doubt.
