West Ham close in on Razvan Rat
Sam Allardyce has confirmed that the 31-year-old Romanian full-back is on the verge of joining the Hammers on a free transfer to help fill the problematic left-back spot

Sam Allardyce is close to making Razvan Rat West Ham's first signing of the summer.

Talks are reported to be at an advanced stages between the Hammers and the Shakhtar Donetsk defender who is out of contract at the Ukranian club this summer.

The Hammers boss confirmed that personal terms are being discussed ahead of the Romanian undergoing a medical at Upton Park.

"I think at the moment it is talking terms and conditions and if we get through that then hopefully it's a chance of a medical and then see where we go from there," Allardyce told Sky Sports News.

Allardyce believes Rat could finally provide the solution to his problems at left-back, a position where he is yet to decide on a first team regular.

"He has played Champions League this year, if everything goes to plan we get a player that has played at the highest level for his country and for Shaktar Donetsk at the moment," added Allardyce.

"His experience and talents from abroad bringing them into the Premier League would be a great asset for us if we can sort it out."

The 31-year-old’s agent also confirmed the deal, saying: "The trainer has put him on the top of the wish list and the owner has approved the move."

Rat was named captain of the Romanian national team in 2011 and as so far accumulated 88 caps.
