US football chief elected to Fifa Executive Committee

Snul Gulati will represent Concacaf within world football's governing body after pipping Mexico's football association president Justino Compean to the post

The head of USA's football association (USSF) president Sunil Gulati has been named as the newest member of the Fifa Executive Committee.

He replaces fellow American and former Concacaf General Secretary Chuck Blazer by a close 18-17 vote over Mexican Football Federation (FMF) president Justino Compean.

"US Soccer president Sunil Gulati has been elected to be a member of the Fifa Executive Committee representing the North Zone," the USSF announced on Twitter on Friday afternoon.

Gulati will be one of three Concacaf members on the legislative group. Jeffrey Webb - president of Concacaf and the Cayman Islands Football Association - represents the Caribbean region, while Guatemala's Rafael Saguero represents Central America.

The 53-year-old, a childhood immigrant from Allahabad, India, has been president of the USSF since 2006.
